Joining a table: the unwritten rules

When your bet can go down at a casino table, what a seat asks of you, whose decisions count at your spot, and which table rules are written down.

Nobody has ever shown you how to sit down at a casino table. Almost nobody is ever shown. This lesson is the minute before you sit, and what the rules ask of you in it.

Before we start: every seat at a blackjack table is taken, and you would like to play. What can you do? Nothing is scored; the answer comes at the end.

The short answer

Sit down whenever you like; the bet waits. Bets go down before any card is dealt, and once the round has started a bet cannot be added to, cut or taken back. The decisions at your spot are yours, and nobody else may make them for you. At roulette nothing moves after “no más apuestas”, and at the poker table the phone stays out of use.

Leo and Maya stand behind two empty chairs at a cleared blackjack table, each with a hand on a chair back, the green felt in front of them bare but for its painted betting shapes.
Maya smiling, explaining with an open hand.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

People think the hard part of a first table is the game. It is not. The hard part is the minute before you sit, and almost none of it is unwritten: it sits in the rulebooks published for the casinos.

Taking a seat

At a blackjack table you can sit down at any moment; it is the bet that waits. Under the rules Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ) publishes, the dealer invites the bets before any card is dealt, so a bet goes down in the gap before the next round.

The round has started and the first cards are out. Spot 4 is open, and a bet on it waits for the next round.

Maya with one palm raised in a gentle stop gesture.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

Sit down when you are ready, not when the dealer is halfway round the table. Nobody minds a player who waits for the next round: that is how the rules are written.

Your spot, your decisions

Once your bet is down, the rules settle two things: what you may still do with it, and whose word counts at your spot.

  • Your hand — yours to decideHow much to bet, whether to take a card, double, insure or split: the decisions at a spot are strictly the player’s own.
  • Somebody else’s decision — not theirs to makePlayers may not interfere in another player’s decision — to stand, split, double, insure or surrender — and no player may play another player’s hand.
  • Your bet, once it is down — changed only as the rules provideNo bet may be raised, lowered or taken back other than in the ways the rulebook provides: doubling, splitting, insurance.
Maya with a finger raised and a knowing look.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

The player at the next spot will tell you what they would do. You can listen, nod and do whatever you meant to do: under these rules their opinion has no weight at all.

At the roulette table

Roulette has a track of its own. Two rules are worth knowing before your first spin.

  1. The call closes the table. Once the dealer calls “no más apuestas”, no bet may be made, and none already down may be taken back or changed.
  2. Your bet is yours to watch. The player keeps an eye on the bet, checks that it is playing on the option chosen, and corrects any mistake in good time.

The ball has landed, and the dolly stands on the number.

In the poker room

The poker room has a track of its own too. What the published rules ask of a player at a poker table, in order:

  • Your phoneNot used at the table: communication devices such as phones and radios are not allowed there.
  • A breakIf you need to get up, your seat is kept for 15 minutes, once the floor supervisor has been told.

The button (the disc that marks which poker seat is dealing this hand; it moves one seat on every hand) marks which seat is dealing this hand, and the two blinds (the two forced bets that start a poker hand, and the two amounts a game is named by) sit to its left. Seat 6 is free.

Who has the last word

And where the rules leave a doubt, the floor staff answer it. Under the poker rules of the catalogue Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ) publishes, any disagreement about how the rules are to be read goes to the table supervisor or the section supervisor.

Practice: your first minute

A moment at a table, three answers, and after each answer the rule it rests on, with its publisher named above the scene. Level 1 is a blackjack table, and every moment says whose rule it is; level 2 is a signpost to roulette and the poker room, and is not scored.

The practice table needs JavaScript. Here is one moment from it, with the answer.

Where the answers come from. Every answer comes from a published rule, quoted with its publisher and the date we read it.

One strip, no rounds. Every square on the strip is one moment of level 1; when they are full, level 2 begins by itself. Level 2 is not scored. Progress stays in this browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Five quick ones. Pick an answer, then check it. No timer, no points: just whether it stuck.

A question marked “New situation” asks you to use the lesson on a case it did not show.

1You reach a blackjack table where the first card of the round is already out, and a spot is open. When can your bet go down?

Show the answer

Answer: Before the first card of the next round. No bet is accepted after the first card of a round has been drawn.

  • Before the first card of the next round No bet is accepted once the first card of a round has been drawn, so the next round is the first one you can join.
  • Once the dealer has dealt the other players Later in the round is no better: the bet waits for the next one.
  • Straight away, so the dealer deals you in The round closed to new bets with its first card.
2A stranger at the table keeps telling you when to take a card. What weight does that have?

Show the answer

Answer: None: the decision at your spot is yours. Players may not interfere in another player’s decision, and nobody may play another player’s hand.

  • It decides the hand if you nod Nodding does not hand the decision over to anybody.
  • It counts if the dealer hears it The dealer hearing it changes nothing: the decision is the player’s.
  • None: the decision at your spot is yours Other players may not interfere in your decision.
3The dealer has called “no más apuestas” at a roulette table. What can you still do with your chips on the table?

Show the answer

Answer: Nothing: no bet may be made, moved or taken back. After the call, no bet may be made, and none already made may be taken back or changed.

  • Take them back, but not add any Taking a bet back is closed as well as adding one.
  • Nothing: no bet may be made, moved or taken back The call closes the table to every change.
  • Move them, but not take them back Moving a bet is changing it, and that is closed too.
4You are in a poker game and need to get up for a while. What keeps your seat? new situation

Show the answer

Answer: Telling the floor supervisor: the seat is then kept for 15 minutes. A player who needs to get up may keep the seat for 15 minutes, after telling the floor supervisor — and nobody may play the hand in their place.

  • Leaving your chips on the table, for as long as you like The rule counts minutes, not chips.
  • Telling the floor supervisor: the seat is then kept for 15 minutes Notice first, and the seat waits 15 minutes.
  • Asking a neighbour to play for you No player may play another player’s hand.

The question we opened with. Wait for a seat, and ask the dealer how this table works before a chip goes down.

If gambling stops being fun, the SCJ self-exclusion applies in every casino in the country. Minimum entry age: 18 (age of majority under Law 19.221; Law 19.995 bars minors from gaming rooms). The casino may ask for an official ID. More on responsible gaming.

How it’s worked out

Sources, numbers and hosts

Sources. Every rule on this page is quoted from the document that states it, in Spanish, with its publisher and the date we read it: the catalogue of games Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ) publishes, one set of table rules for every casino in Chile, and the same regulator’s guide pages on how the games are played.

Numbers. There are none on this page: the rules it quotes are about when and how, not how much.

What this lesson does not cover. Buying chips and cashing out, the sign beside the table and the full rules of each game are subjects of their own. Where the course has a track on one of them, this page points at it and stops.

Hosts. Maya is an illustrated character. Her backstory, a former floor supervisor, is written for the course: she is not a real person and does not speak for any casino. The rules and numbers on this page come from the sources it cites, not from her experience.

No promise. Knowing how to join a table is not a reason to join one. Nothing on this page says an evening at a table is a good idea for you, and nothing here tells you how one would end.
